The Role of Thermography in Diagnosis of Knee Joint Disease

Abstract
A thermograhpy means the recording of temperature or temperature distribution of body by infrared radiation emited by the surface of the surface of the body. In 1956, Lawson first reported validation of thermogram in breast cancer. Since many
authors
have modified it and developed far advanced Digital Infrared Thermographic Imaging which is under control of comprter. The diagnosis of knee joint disease in early stage is very difficult because of insufficient objective information and delayed
detection of disease by other diagnostic tools. Thermographic examinations were performed in 50 patients with knee joint pain. And comparison was also made with thermogram of 20 subjects in control to definite the thermographic patterns of knee
joint
area in normal group, to compare the thermographic findings between normal & patients group and to verify the role of thermpgraphy in early diagnosis of knee joint disease. As a result, symmetric thermal pattern, prepatellar cooling and narrow
isotherm
area were round in control group. But in patient group, there were asymmetric, narrowing and irregular thermal pattern and high temperature isotherm areas in the lesion site. It can be considered that thermography provides objective information
in
estabilishing the early diagnosis of knee joint disease.
